It is with great sadness that the Board and the Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Greece bid farewell to the grande dame of Greek theatre, Irene Papas, who passed away this morning.
She starred in major productions of stage and screen, winning countless awards and distinctions both here and abroad. Her enormous talent, her professionalism, and her natural beauty made her one of the most recognisable Greek cultural figures around the world. There is no doubting how much her invaluable contribution to the arts will prove a true gift to future generations.
Finally, the National Theatre of Greece is profoundly grateful for her generosity in allowing us to rent the Irene Papas School of Athens, where many of our artistic activities are housed.
