The Greeks have pitched camp outside the walls of Troy, having crossed the Aegean Sea to seek revenge for the abduction of the fair Helen. Inside the city, a new love, full of passion and urgency, blossoms between King Priam’s youngest son, Troilus, and Cressida, the daughter of the seer Calchas.
Shakespeare draws inspiration and material from episodes in the Trojan War and writes a tragedy, or perhaps a comedy, about the art of war and of love, capturing emotions and behaviour that emerge in the heat of the moment and then commenting on them later in the cold light of day.
