In Athens between the wars, within the narrow confines of a paved courtyard, Toula, the young ‘sapling’ of the title, falls in love for the first time with the unemployed Yangos. But what will Toula do when the young man betrays her for the sake of Eva, who has the connections to help him secure a better future for himself? How much strength can love have in the face of poverty and how can love prevailwhen social mechanisms ascribe a monetary value to it? Shortly after the First World War, at a time of great social upheaval and the crisis of values that would lead Greece into the Asia Minor catastrophe, Pantelis Horn transformed the traditional form of a study of manners into a contemporary folktale whose symbolism is still capable of moving audiences and making them think, despite the distance in time that separates us from the writer.
