The linguistic civil war that first appeared in the early 19^th century was between two competing currents: tyrannical authoritarian archaism and populist demoticism. When Adamantios Korais outlined his own proposal in respect of the language question, a strategy of cautious and gradual correction of “vulgar” Greek, now known as the “middle way”, it was inevitable that he would become caught in the crossfire between both extremes. Against this backdrop, in which each side sought to ridicule and expose the other, the Korakistika or the Correction of the Romaic Language was published in 1813 – without the permission of its author, Iakovos Rizos Neroulos. This anti-Korais comedy “was not written with the purpose of being published or harming the reputation of the learned Korais, but was fashioned as an amusement for distribution among certain of my friends”. The language question appears nowadays to have been settled, but there are still those who support a “purer” form of Greek – and not necessarily for linguistic reasons. Dimitris Dimopoulos offers a performed reading of the Korakistika that foregrounds the play’s patchwork of discourses: the vernacular of the period, local dialects, and the artificial language that it parodies, demonstrating the Molieresque character of a text that despite its dramatic structure, was intended to be read rather than staged.
