SUMMER TOUR

Following Athens’ defeat in the Peloponnesian War, corruption and inequality are out of control. The Athenian women, on the initiative of Praxagora, therefore decide to take radical action. Disguised as men, they secretly get into the Assembly and a vote is passed that gives them power. They introduce political reforms and implement communal rules on property and sex. However, their plans prove impossible to enforce and are undermined by a succession of tragicomic situations.
Ecclesiazusae, which is Aristophanes’ penultimate work, was first performed in about 392 BCE. Through the comic form, humorous dialogues and hilarious episodes of this political comedy, the poet expresses his bitterness at the impossible situation in Athens after the end of the Peloponnesian War.
